The NYC '03 officially blasted off today at 10:00 a.m. Houston time! The eager crowd of Youth and Youth Leaders made a line that snaked through the main gate of Six Flags AstroWorld. By the time all 8,000 participants had entered the park, it had taken up to an hour for the whole group to pass through the gates. Now that is a Texas-sized group! From one $end to the other of the seven mini-themed areas of the park, NYCers could be found braving the wildest roller coasters, dropping 20 stories out of the sky, splashing down the man-made river, trying their luck at the arcades for prizes, listening to the Nazarene PR Groups performing, eating and staying cool. Being cool and staying cool in the 96 degree heat (with a 101 degree heat index) encouraged much shaved ice and ice cream eating. It was a sweet way to beat the heat. Cross Photo Opening C$4eremonies Electrified the Crowd An enthusiastic crowd counted down to a video explosion of the chili pepper symbol. This began the Opening Ceremonies by revealing NYC's video symbol of the cross on all the screens at the front of the auditorium. Then Rev. Gary Hartke, Director of NYI, not only extended a personal welcome, but shared greetings from President George W. Bush. The the NYC '03 Worship Team lead the gathering into a rich time of singing, preparation and worship. In an atmosphere of rev4Derent anticipation, Rev. Brent Hardesty, USA/Canada Coordinator, offered his personal welcome to everyone and then signaled the moment for the stage cross to be lit. This giant cross blazed with heaven-like intensity, serving as a backdrop to the stage. An indoor fireworks display then illuminated the entire platform. It was like the lighting of the Olympic torch that remains lit for all pf the games. The cross, in its technological splendor, will remain as a vibrant visual image for the duration ofDT the conference. The swell of excitement was brought to a peace as Rev. Bill Sunberg, Canada Region NYI President, eloquently prayed to God for NYC '03 and for each individual's experience with the creator in the coming days. Rev. Hardesty then introduced the keynote speaker, Rev. Deirdre Brower. The pageantry of the District's carrying in banners with their name on them flooded the auditorium with color and a sense of majesty. Sseventy-seven children from the hosting Houston District escorted eaTdch banner to the stage with a lantern. As each District was called, cheers of excitement and unity echoed. The crowd was awed by this visual image of the number of Nazarene Districts throughout the USA/Canada and the sense of all coming together as one.=20 A hushed crowd listened intently to Rev. Brower as she shared God's Word from Revelations Chapter 5. As she read, her British lilt engaged this USA/Canada crowd, as though they were listening to the Bible for the first time. Rev. Brower's challedtnge to the Youth focused on three key questions: "Who would you give your life for?"; "Why would you give your life? and "Are you quite ready for what that means?" "If anyone would come after me, he = must deny himself
and take up his cross daily and follow me."

- Luke 9:23

From Rev. Brent Hardesty’s Benediction in the Evening Worship = Service:

“One night at my family’s dinner table we heard a noise = outside. When I askedw y my three-year-old what he thought it was, he said, = ‘Its Jesus, Daddy’. I asked my son, ‘What does he = want?’ And he preached the Gospel to me. My son said, = ‘Daddy, Jesus just wants to tell us – I love you!’ All = Jesus wants to tell us is that He loves us.”

On this, the second full day of NYC '03, there is so much happening = that I couldn't begin to share it all. God is at work in so many = wonderful ways! Rest assured that all is well in y0{ Houston, and that God = is working in the lives of your friends and children - for I know He's = working on us.

Blessings!

And yet, this was just a blink of a moment with God that will be a recalled in blurred images of recollection and stored in feelings that will remind us of the sensing of the Spirit that we, as a`p body, shared while encountering God in Houston. To explain all this requires us to step backwards in time to that moment when each of us started our journey of relationship with God. No two people are precisely at the same point on this road to heaven. Some who attended had acknowledged Jesus, but had not truly allowed themselves to accept His forgiveness and receive His grace deep within their hearts. Others had already received this precious gift of salvation, but were now hearing the Lord call p them to completely release their life into His hands. Many watched while these came by the hundreds to an altar of prayer to commit to this next step on their journey. There were those who were already sanctified, but were waiting for and seeking after God's will for today and tomorrow. Their faithfulness was rewarded as they clearly heard from their Abba for the direction He would lead them next. Some responded to the call to be a Pastor; while others felt the urging to be missionaries, and still ot hers were commissioned to be Christ to their world through everyday life. For all, God had a message - and for all God had a roadmap. Teens Seated As we have collectively met with God here at NYC, we have been enriched by the central theme of Discipleship - The Journey. This over arching theme has guided us through the Bible Studies, seminars, workshops, recreation, worship and sermons of the week. Along the road we have paused to take in the responsibility and privilege of covenant, lingered over the need and challenge of compassion, halted to catch an overview of our global community and rested in the oneness of God's holiness. It has been a journey - and now its time to go ... go back into the world. Back into our Churches, our homes and back to you. You are the ones who have loved us, prayed for us, sacrificed for us, and you are the ones that have invested in our journey with the Lord. We return bringing you more of Jesus within us. We are forever changed and forever grateful. N YC '03 - Life is BIGGER! _____ =20 Now You Go ... This was the title and theme of Rev. As we have collectively met with God here at NYC, we = have been enriched by the central theme of Discipleship - The Journey. = This over arching theme has guided us through the Bible Studies, = seminars, workshops, recreation, worship .0and sermons of the week. Along = the road we have paused to take in the responsibility and privilege of = covenant, lingered over the need and challenge of compassion, halted to = catch an overview of our global community and rested in the oneness of = God's holiness.

It has been a journey - and now its time to go ... go = back into the world. Back into our Churches, our homes and back to you. = You are the ones who have loved us, prayed for us, sacrificed for us, = and you ar02e the ones that have invested in our journey with the Lord. We = return bringing you more of Jesus within us. We are forever changed and = forever grateful.

NYC '03 - Life is BIGGER!

Now You Go ...

This was the title and theme of Rev. Gary Hartke's (NYI = Director) message during the Sunday Morning Worship service. = Highlighting the need for each of us to live a life that carries Jesus = in24to our individual worlds, the message challenged each participant to = take what they have learned during the week, back to their communities = and to be Jesus to those around them.
